Voluntary protection against horse virus

| Blog | June 6, 2011

A terribly contagious, untacked equine herpes virus infection seems to have turned the horse world in the western states on its proverbial head. But do even think to panic.

Good hint for horse owners is to keep your horses at home for some period of time. Try to make everything they do not go nose to nose or have direct contact with each other. Do not share brushs, and other supplies. Also, try to avoid petting and feeding other people’s horses with your hands, and of course wash your own hands before and after handling horses.

Also, be sure that the selective information, that you gather on your own is from reputable sources such as Davis Veterinary Hospital at or the California Department of Food and Agriculture or University of California . Always check twice the source to be certain about that what you are reading is actual.

Remember, the virus cannot be passed to humans. Many stables have voluntarily assumed a post of lockdown to help come off the spread of this highly contagious, hazardous virus known as EHM. At the moment there is no vaccinations against the virus and no proven treatment.

Castro Valley’s Apple Creek Equestrian Center on Crow Canyon was one who decided to lock down—no horses in or out for three weeks.

Several Apple Creek horse people decided to left their horses at home and passed on it this year. Peggy Moore, the owner is following the same protocol. Unfortunately, anyone who chooses to leave cannot return for three weeks.

According to trainer Joellen Osland, Alta Vista Equestrian Center is also on a voluntary lockdown. Other local ranches—Diablo Arabians, Basso’s, Castle Rock Arabians, Summit Ranch, Leap of Faith and Brown Ranch—are doing the same.

Colleen Swift, chair for the Diablo Arabian Horse Association horse show , made hard decision and canceled the group’s four-day horse show. The show was scheduled at Brookside Equestrian Center in Elk Grove.

Rod Hernandez, a well-known Castro Valley quarter horse trainer, made the decision to pull his show horses out of an AQHA show. According to Colleen and Rod, both dyed-in-the-wool horse show people, the horses’ well-being and health are much more essential than any performance.

Close by, Rancho Murieta Equestrian—a well-known horseshow venue—has also decided to close down for three weeks.

According to the California Department of Food and Agriculture, all of the current cases of this virus (known as EHM) are horses that took part in the National Cutting Horse Association’s Western National Championships in Ogden, UT, from April 30 to May 8, 2011.

CDFA statistics show that California now has a total of 16 horses with confirmed EHM. All of these horses had contact with the recent cutting show in Utah. The confirmed cases are in such countries as: Amador,Shasta and Stanislaus, Glenn, Kern, Marin, Napa, Los Angeles, Placer, Plumas . Two confirmed cases are being treated at the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Hospital at Davis.

A critical care specialist at the Center for Equine Health and the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Gary Magdesian, said that the virus is spread because horses are nose to noseor are within the same air.
The virus could also be spread through shared items such as water buckets, towels, bits, and even human hands that have contact with an infected horse’s nose and then contacted with the nose of another horse.

Essential recommendation to horse owners is simple: Don’t panic, be safe and follow common rules we have mentioned.
